UPMC NORTHWEST SURGEON EARNS BOARD CERTIFICATION

Aug. 12, 2006 — General surgeon Daniel Palermo, MD, a UPMC Northwest staff physician, has earned board certification in surgery from the American Board of Surgery. Board certification is indicative of advanced credentials in a physician's specialty.

Dr. Palermo's practice known as Northwest Surgical Associates-UPMC is at 212 Prospect Ave., Franklin. He has practiced here since last September.

Dr. Palermo came here from Kalamazoo, MI, where he graduated from Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine and completed a five-year surgical residency at MSU's Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies.

Before enrolling in medical school, the Pittsburgh native was a research associate for two years with Genentech, a San Francisco-based biotechnology company, and was a senior research biochemist and pharmaceutical project manager for 15 years with Pharmacia & Upjohn in Kalamazoo.

His education also includes a bachelor's degree in microbiology from the Pennsylvania State University and a master's degree in microbiology from the University of Virginia.

Dr. Palermo's special interest is minimally-invasive, laparoscopic surgery.
