THORACIC/VASCULAR SURGEON JOINS UPMC NORTHWEST STAFF

	Dr. James W. Klena, MD

March 6, 2006 — Thoracic/vascular surgeon James W. Klena, MD, has joined the UPMC Northwest medical staff, and is an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Klena is a partner in the Heart, Lung & Esophageal Surgery Institute (HLESI) of UPMC. Under the direction of James D. Luketich, MD, the institute’s Division of Thoracic Surgery employs Dr. Klena and 11 other thoracic surgeons who practice at various UPMC facilities.

Board certified in both general and thoracic surgery, Dr. Klena joins the UPMC Northwest medical staff following four years at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Mich., where he was a staff surgeon.

The Johnstown area native graduated from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, completed an internship and residency in general surgery at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, and completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo.

Before attending medical school, Dr. Klena earned a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering and marine transportation from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. He is a lieutenant commander in the United States Naval Reserve Medical Corps.
