RETINAL SURGEONS BEGIN PROVIDING
CARE AT UPMC NORTHWEST

Nov. 9, 2004 — An eye surgery practice that specializes in treating retinal diseases has begun seeing patients at UPMC Northwest.

Erie Retinal Surgery, which includes Robert Stratton, MD, J.P. Dailey, MD, and Robert Baldwin, MD, specializes in the treatment of detached retinas, macular degeneration, diabetes-related retinal diseases including diabetic retinopathy, and other retinal disorders.

The practice’s presence here marks the first time retinal care has been available at UPMC Northwest. Ophthalmologists whose patients need treatment for retinal diseases typically refer them to out-of-town practices, but Erie Retinal Surgery now will provide care for some of these patients locally.

The three board certified retinal specialists will see patients for office visits, minor procedures, and follow-up care in The Eye Center at UPMC Northwest’s Oil City campus. When more invasive surgery is necessary, the doctors will perform it in Erie, where they have facilities equipped with microsurgical and other specialized retinal surgery instruments that are not available here.

Dr. Stratton holds a degree in medicine from the University of North Carolina, completed an ophthalmology residency and fellowship at the University of Iowa, and a vitreoretinal fellowship at Tulane University in Louisiana. Before moving to Erie in 1984, he was director of retinal surgery at the University of Florida.

Dr. Dailey is a graduate of Cornell University Medical School, completed residency and fellowship studies in ophthalmology at Harvard University, and did additional retinal fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in England. He is an assistant clinical professor at Case Western University and has been an active medical researcher with more than 20 scientific publications to his credit.

Dr. Baldwin’s medical degree is from Penn State University, and he completed both an ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal fellowship at the University of Virginia.

Dr. Stratton has practiced in Erie for 20 years including 13 years with Dr. Dailey and three years with Dr. Baldwin.

The doctors will see patients in The Eye Center by referral. Patients who receive referrals can schedule appointments by calling the practice’s Erie office at 814-456-4241.
