UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH PROMOTES HOSPITAL STAFF PHYSICIAN

Feb. 4, 2004 — UPMC Northwest’s physician director of emergency services has been promoted to clinical professor of emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. This is the highest rank in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the university, where Rade B. Vukmir, MD, JD, FCCP, has been a faculty member for 13 years.

Dr. Vukmir began his academic career with the University of Pittsburgh in 1991 as a clinical assistant professor of anesthesiology/critical care medicine in the university’s Departments of Anesthesia, Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. After holding this rank for six years, he was promoted to clinical associate professor of emergency medicine, and maintained this rank for six years until his recent advancement to clinical professor.

During his tenure with the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Vukmir has published 27 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals, authored 21 reviews for health care publications, and written multiple chapters for medical textbooks and reference books. He also has published four books, authored 33 abstracts summarizing medical research studies, and given more than 300 lectures and other presentations.

He has been editor of four medical journals and newsletters, and a reviewer for eight national peer review journals. He holds fellowship status in the College of Chest Physicians and American College of Emergency Physicians.

Dr. Vukmir’s academic career also has included two annual teaching awards that he received from the University of Pittsburgh Emergency Medicine Residence Program, and he has been a visiting professor at both national and international sites.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities with the university, Dr. Vukmir has been instrumental in establishing an instructional program for emergency medicine physician assistants at UPMC Northwest, and establishing UPMC Northwest as a University of Pittsburgh instructional site for emergency medicine physicians who are completing their final year of medical school.

Dr. Vukmir has been UPMC Northwest’s physician director of emergency services since 1997.
