UPMC NORTHWEST TO OFFER DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM
January 6, 2009 — As part of a research study, the Diabetes Prevention Support Center of the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute and UPMC Northwest will offer a Group Lifestyle Balance Program beginning Monday, Jan. 26.
The program is for persons at risk for Type 2 diabetes and/or cardiovascular disease. To be eligible for the study, a person must be overweight and at least 25 years old, and have pre-diabetes (fasting blood glucose of 100-125 mg/dl) or metabolic syndrome (elevated blood pressure, large waist and abnormal blood fat levels).
Study participants will learn about healthy eating and increasing physical activity, and will receive support to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
