COLON/RECTAL SURGEON TO JOIN UPMC NORTHWEST STAFF

July 24, 2007 — A specialist in colon and rectal surgery will join the UPMC Northwest medical staff Wednesday, Aug. 1. David Ferraro, MD, will practice with general surgeon Daniel Palermo, MD, at Northwest Surgical Associates-UPMC.

Dr. Ferraro is joining UPMC Northwest’s surgical team after completing a one-year fellowship in colon/rectal surgery at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans, LA. Earlier the Indiana, PA, native completed a general surgery internship and residency at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh.

The former corporate pilot is an Army veteran whose active duty included service as an emergency room staff physician at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, TX, a battalion surgeon in Riyadh, Saudia Arabia, during Operation Desert Fox, and a staff preventive medicine officer at Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital in Fort Polk, Louisiana. While serving at Bayne-Jones, he also was an emergency room staff physician at Beauregard Memorial Hospital in nearby DeRidder, LA.

Dr. Ferraro is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he received a bachelor’s degree in biology, and he earned a degree in medicine from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

In addition to specializing in colon/rectal surgery, Dr. Ferraro will practice general surgery in partnership with Dr. Palermo. His special interests are colon/rectal cancer prevention and treatment, minimally-invasive surgery, and colorectal cancer screening including colonoscopy.

Dr. Ferraro, his wife Veronica Santee, MD (a family practitioner who also will join the UPMC Northwest staff this summer) and their sons, Travis, 9, David, 5, and daughter Rosalynne, 3½, reside in Franklin.
