UPMC NORTHWEST SETS CANCER SURVIVORS CELEBRATION

July 18, 2007 — Registration is under way for the Survivors Celebration that will be part of UPMC Northwest’s 19th annual Cancer Awareness Week. This traditional celebration, co-sponsored by Venango-Forest Cancer Coalition, is set from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the hospital pavilion along Fairfield Drive in Seneca.

The event for cancer survivors and their families will include a free picnic, entertainment, and a candlelight ceremony in honor of and in memory of area residents who have had cancer. Individuals can register by calling the UPMC Northwest Community Relations office at 814-677-1463 or 1-800-422-8888.

In recognition of their loved ones who have had cancer, families again this year will have an opportunity to purchase commemorative Wendell August ornaments. Names of those who are honored or remembered through the purchase of ornaments will be read during a ceremony that will be part of the celebration.

Orders for ornaments ($5 each) are due by Thursday, July 26. Individuals are asked to use the order form that has been published with The Derrick and The News-Herald. Order forms also are available at UPMC Cancer Center at UPMC Northwest, 100 Fairfield Drive, Seneca.

UPMC Northwest and UPMC Cancer Center at UPMC Northwest celebrate Cancer Awareness Week every year to emphasize the importance of early detection and treatment of cancer. This year’s observance also will include the traditional Cancer Awareness Week Golf Scramble on Monday, Aug. 13, at Wanango Country Club; a Cancer Awareness Week Nursing Symposium on Tuesday, Aug. 14, in the hospital’s Courtyard Conference Room; and the Cancer Awareness Week Professional Symposium for cancer caregivers on Thursday, Aug. 16, at Wanango Country Club.
