BIRTHING CENTER OBTAINS ADVANCED ULTRASOUND SYSTEM
Gifts to UPMC Northwest Foundation Annual Appeal help make acquisition possible

Jan. 15, 2007 — UPMC Northwest’s Family Birthing Center has a new ultrasound unit that is helping staff members meet the needs of expectant mothers and their babies.

Acquisition of the state-of-the-art General Electric LOGIQ 3 system was made possible through gifts that UPMC Northwest employees and others made to UPMC Northwest Foundation’s 2006 Annual Appeal. The foundation holds this fundraiser every year and designates the proceeds for a specific project that benefits the hospital.

UPMC Northwest's new LOGIQ 3 system provides superior ultrasound images that give essential information to William McGrail, MD (background, with patient Kim Wood), and other obstetricians.

“The foundation is proud to assist the hospital in bringing this leading edge obstetrics technology to our community,” said foundation executive director Roger McCauley.

The LOGIQ 3 system provides superior ultrasound images that give essential information to obstetricians and Family Birthing Center staff members. It is used most often at delivery: birthing center team members can evaluate the size and position of the baby and obtain other information that helps to assure a safe, healthy delivery, according to obstetrician/gynecologist William McGrail, MD, of the UPMC Northwest medical staff.

Birthing center staff members already have used the LOGIQ 3 system to evaluate several obstetrics patients.

The LOGIQ 3 system “is a great addition to our birthing center,” says Family Birthing Center unit director Cheri Siverling, RNC. “It’s part of providing mothers with the best care we can give.”

UPMC Northwest Foundation’s sole purpose is to support UPMC Northwest in its mission to provide high-quality health care for area residents. The foundation’s role includes funding new equipment, programs, services and other improvements; building an endowment fund to cover future capital costs; and providing grants for health awareness, prevention, and education.

Proceeds from previous Annual Appeals have helped UPMC Northwest obtain new diagnostic and treatment technology including a state-of-the-art Stereoguide breast biopsy system and a leading edge ADAC Pinnacle3 radiation treatment planning system that advanced the hospital’s radiation therapy capabilities. Annual Appeal funds also have been designated for the advancement of cardiac and stroke services, for programs and services not included in the new hospital construction budget, and completion of the new hospital landscaping through the foundation’s “Branching Out” appeal.
